In conversation with Gayani De Alwis How females can conquer the world in a male-dominated industry

For Gayani De Alwis, life was all about taking up new challenges. Having had her primary education at Visakha Vidyalaya in the maths stream and later pursuing a degree in chemical engineering at the Moratuwa University and a MSc in food process engineering from Reading University UK, she was used to being around in male dominant environments. Her career at Unilever has shifted between food process engineering and supply chain management before she stepped into transport and logistics space. Gradually progressing through the hierarchy her never-say-no attitude was among the many secrets behind her success. She was the first female supply chain director of Unilever Sri Lanka, the position she held last before her premature retirement to start her consulting and lecturing business six years ago. In her new role as the Global Chairperson of Women in Logistics & Transportation (WiLAT), she says her priority is to grow the membership base in the transport and logistics sector, increase reach and develop global partnerships to empower women globally.
