Honouring the Architects of Our Lives

Every year on 1st October, the International Day of Older Persons - often simply known as Elders Day - provides a crucial moment for us to pause, reflect, and celebrate the invaluable contributions of our older generation. It is a day not just for appreciation, but for a sober assessment of how well we, as a society, are supporting the architects of our present and the custodians of our past.

The notion that old age is a period of decline and withdrawal is a tired, regrettable stereotype. Our elders are a vibrant and essential demographic. They are the bedrock of families, the experienced hands in communities, and often the glue that holds our social fabric together. Think of the grandparents providing vital childcare, the volunteers maintaining local institutions, or the mentors offering decades of hard-won professional wisdom. Their contributions are fundamental, yet too often, they are overlooked or limited by structural ageism  and neglect.
