As we all know, Sri Lanka’s independence on 4th February 1948 was not achieved overnight. Whatever the circumstances that finally led to Sri Lanka gaining independence, it could not been overlooked that decades of work went behind preparing the nation to fight for its freedom. It was the result of years of struggle, sacrifice, and dedication of many individuals, who were monks, educators, reformers, philanthropists and journalists. These pioneers, both men and women, played a crucial role in waking national awareness and paving the path to freedom.

One of the earliest voices of resistance was Ven. Migettuwatte Gunananda Thero. His powerful speeches and public debates defended local religion and culture during colonial rule. His courage inspired pride and unity among the people at a time when Sri Lankan identity faced threats. Similarly, Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero made significant contributions through education. As a pioneer of Buddhist learning, he helped revive national education and encouraged intellectual resistance to colonial control. His work shaped future leaders of the independence movement. Anagarika Dharmapala stands out as a strong nationalist and reformer. Through his writings, speeches, and international advocacy, he instilled pride in Sri Lanka’s heritage and urged people to break free from colonial thinking. His influence reached beyond politics, affecting cultural and moral independence.
