The Legacy of Motherhood Mother’s Day 2026

7 May 2026 03:17 pm

The onus on the shoulders of a mother (married, single or guardian) is an immense responsibility even if there are shared roles within her family. In these troubled times, motherhood is often questioned and a weight of guilt is placed on her, if there should be a mishap within the family. A child coming home late on his/her own is often looked at with a jaundiced eye. What if… is often on the minds of the public. ‘Where was his mother?’ is often the question asked with raised eyebrows and the now familiar eye-roll.

The legacy of Motherhood is simply not a title. It is a crown of unconditional love, challenges, the maintaining of values and culture providing a deep foundation for her children. A mother’s love has its drawbacks and she is constantly faced with rebellion especially when her children begin gaining independence and a voice of their own. Mothers learn to stay solidly stoic through the strong willed behaviour of her children knowing full well that she should be addressing the behaviour and not the child. Unfortunately there are some of us who tend to give in easily with a million excuses. Those who stay on track have found their leadership has borne fruit.

The Task of a Mother

Mothers are expected to plant seeds of kindness, resilience, and empathy, teaching children how to navigate through life. We are not supposed to soft peddle the hard stuff. The nurturing and care a mother provides affects how her children will parent their own, creating a ripple effect. This is easier said than done. We who have tread the path know the gains of nurturing.  Sometimes tough love is the only solution. It is said that mothers are mostly and often unrecognized although the long days and tireless care are the backbone of a healthy, next-generation. What recognition do they gain in their family, the community, society? We will never know.
