Child protection is considered a national crisis in Sri Lanka. Statistics indicate that at least 17 children have been physically or sexually abused and murdered from July 2020 to July 2022. It is in this backdrop that the StopChild Cruelty Trust launched ‘Chronicles of Melancholy’, a collection of poignant true life stories of victims/survivors of various forms of child abuse. “The book also includes stories of victims/survivors who even attempted death by suicide due to mental/verbal abuse at school,” said Stop Child Cruelty Trust founder Dr. Tush Wickramanayaka. “The book has been in the making for two years. There have been delays caused by Covid and the inability to interview some of the survivors face-to-face. The most gut wrenching story of the child who died of suicide ‘Stilled Tears - Faded White Garb’was released at the pre-launch event.”
