“Do you follow the auspicious times of the New Year?” asked a bewildered grandmother of the new age. Before I could respond she continued.. “I can’t be bothered because it’s just the two of us. It’s been that way these few years.” Auspicious times are now viewed suspiciously and that is an unfortunate matter and a topic we shouldn’t be discussing here. (sigh!) For the present, seniors like us should lend a hand towards building up the younger generation with traditions even in the minutest of ways. View it as a new lease of interest.

The story of our times is that grandparents who invested in the education of their children are faced with the empty nest syndrome and drag themselves down with loneliness and silent despair. Why? Why cannot we extend ourselves to those who need our company and await the dawn of a NEW YEAR with hope? Children in orphanages and child care facilities would love the intrusion. Children in the neighbourhood would envelope you with love and warmth. Should we mope around at home awaiting that one call from our children who for practical reasons cannot be a physical part of the celebrities ? It’s not impossible! Give yourself a new lease of life by involving yourself for the growth of a new generation!. Children of our times need to recognize the place of elderly citizens in society. It is a great way for them to grow into inclusive human beings. Take a look at the activities and form yourself into a mini-grand club for those who need you. Children don’t expect any expensive physical gifts. Therefore plan a round of activities leading to the NEW YEAR totaling 3 days spread over a few weeks. You will be giving them the gift of memories. These customs ensure the elderly are central figures in the celebrations, fostering inter-generational connection and respect.
