Our next stops during the trip were Virginia Beach and West Virginia Norfolk, We took the Amtrak train from Washington DC and it was the most comfortable ride. The interior of the train was almost like in an aero plane. It had comfortable seats, a well-stocked buffet car and restrooms. Since it was a little over four hours train ride, the distraction of the buffet car was a welcome one. We sat at our table munching at the food we ordered and also enjoying the drinks while we watched the scenery of the green countryside outside the window pass by. This was indeed a treat.

When we got to Virginia beach Norfolk, our friend was there to pick us up from the station. We drove to his comfortable house in a quiet neighbourhood and were treated to a Sri Lankan meal which his wife had prepared for us. Although our plan was to stay one night our friend insisted that we stay for two so that we can explore the area. The next day we set out with our friend to see the Naval Station Norfolk. This United States Navy Base in Norfolk is the largest in the world and is the headquarters of the port of the U.S. Navy’s Fleet Forces Command. Here we had the opportunity to take a 55 minute guided boat tour after purchasing tickets which cost $35 each on a boat named ‘Victory Rover’. The Victory Rover cruises along waters of the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor. There’s a commentator giving the details of the battleships and other naval ships that are harboured at the port. It began its operations as a cruise liner in 2001 starting Naval Base Cruises from Nauticus, which is the home of the famous Battleship Wisconsin. Visitors are given a detailed account of the Naval Base and the ships through the one hour ride. The Battleship Wisconsin (BB-64) is a majestic ship that earned five battle stars during WWII and it is also one of the largest and last battleships ever built by the U.S. Navy.
