Independence Day of Sri Lanka

8 February 2018 10:36 am Pix By Kamanthi Wickramasinghe 70 years have passed since the beautiful island of the then Ceylon gained independence.The British, who were the last Europeans to have colonized the state, imposed a heavy influence on the culture which could be seen even today. Forts, colonial buildings and lifestyles which have been preserved to date are proof of their existence, at times making us wonder how elegantly they have lived in the bygone era. Thanks to the British we now enjoy the taste of tea and coffee in different varieties as well! On February 4, 1948 Sri Lanka gained independence as a result of the struggle put forth by many heroic figures in the country.
