21 September 2023 12:47 pm

Alzheimers and Dementia are two mental disorders that are never too late or too early to take care of! They are considered as strong thieves who robs you of your memory leaving you mentally and physically disabled and disoriented. It is also termed as a “family” sickness as one member of the family having it would plunge the entire family into a difficult situation.

As the theme for 2023 spells out,  Its never too early or never too late to take action about it. Although Alzheimers can never be corrected, awareness, medication and care can offer at least hope of a somewhat better situation. Alzheimers is one of the most common type of Dementia, accounting to 60%-80% to all dementia patients worldwide.  In 1901, Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist identified the disease while treating a 50 year old patient. In 1994 , The Alzheimers Day was launched in Edinburgh with the intention of creating more and more awareness among the public, so that early interventions can be encouraged while helping the carers to understand better how best to look after the patients and the family.

During the month of September which is set aside worldwide as the Alzheimer awareness month, numerous activities take place all over the world to create better awareness about the misconceptions of dementia and Alzheimers.  If not diagnosed in time, it could badly affect one’s mental abilities of learning, thinking, reasoning, remembering, problem solving, and decision making, compromising one’s daily life activities and control over emotions.
