In Sri Lanka, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year is celebrated with the harvest festival. Since we are predominantly an agriculture based community, most of our cultural traditions are interwoven with the various stages in cultivation. April is the harvesting month and it is a tradition to set aside the first and the best portion of the harvest to the gods in gratitude for the help and assistance they were shown by way of timely rain and sunshine – the two most important elements needed for a prosperous harvest. Farmers in almost all countries where agriculture plays an important role, made it a point to worship the natural elements such as the sun, rain, earth and fire treating them as deities.
