Care for the Patient and the Carer

Words : Lakmini Wijemanne When my best friend Kisali’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, I saw how their tight-knight family visibly shook. With three out of the four children residing abroad, it was a daunting task to make sure their mother was taken care of properly. I saw how each of them struggled to take turns to be with their mother and how they readied themselves for the inevitable end. When finally the last days rolled around, aunty was warded at hospital, and two children opted to be with her continuously at her bedside. The two sisters (one completely left the job and the other, thank god for understanding employers, too long leave) and came home, rather the hospital, straight from the airport.
