What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is the name given to a group of conditions where blood glucose levels are too high.Glucose is a type of sugar that the body makes from foods that have carbohydrate (starches or sugars). Glucose enters the bloodstream after we eat carbohydrate containing foods. The pancreas gland detects glucose in the blood and releases a hormone called insulin. Insulin helps move the glucose from the bloodstream into cells in the brain, heart, other organs and muscles to make energy. When the pancreas is unable to make enough insulin or if the insulin is unable to work effectively, leaving blood glucose levels high. This is called diabetes.
