From water fasting and juice cleanses to intermittent fasting and liquid-based diets, new dietary trends continue to capture public attention. Promising rapid weight loss, improved wellbeing and even ‘detoxification’, these approaches are often widely promoted across social media and endorsed by influencers and celebrities. In this interview, Ms. Parami Weerasinghe (SLMC-363); dedicated nutritionist, nutrition educator, and wellness professional, shares her insights on the science behind popular diet trends, the potential risks of extreme dietary practices, and the importance of adopting sustainable approaches to long-term health and wellbeing.

Diet trends seem to emerge every year. What is currently driving the popularity of diets such as water fasting and liquid-based diets?
Several factors contribute to the popularity of these diets, including social media influence, celebrity endorsements, viral success stories, and the desire for rapid weight loss. Many people are attracted by claims of ‘detoxification’ or quick transformations, even when scientific evidence is limited. The accessibility of online information also makes these trends spread rapidly.
What exactly is a water diet, and how does it differ from other fasting methods?
A water diet, or water fasting, involves consuming only water for a specific period while avoiding all food and calorie-containing beverages. This differs from intermittent fasting, where eating is restricted to certain time windows but regular meals are still consumed. Water fasting is much more restrictive and carries greater health risks if undertaken without medical supervision.
